    Joint Media Statement: State Budget does not properly address Aboriginal suicide prevention

    Urgent action is required to address the unacceptable number of deaths caused by suicide in Aboriginal communities. Cutting prevention investment in the State Budget exposes a significant missed opportunity to improve people’s outcomes and help prevent these tragedies in our communities. The Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH), Moorditj Koort Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre (Moorditj Koort) and the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) with its member services, are relieved the State Government has extended the Suicide Prevention Strategy – which was due to end on 30 June 2019 – for a further 18 months. However, are alarmed at the cuts to overall prevention spend.

    Many Voices, Big Impact- Lived Experience Submission to the Sustainable Health Review Interim Report

    In June 2018 WA’s peak bodies representing mental health and consumers invited people with lived experience, carers or family members to participate in two community conversations about the Sustainable Health Review Interim Report, with a focus on mental health and the future of the mental health system in WA. The final report from these events is now available and captures key themes and recommendations that emerged from the lived experience feedback received at the events. This report has been sent to the Sustainable Health Review Panel and Secretariat, to be considered in the final SHR report.

WAAMH has reviewed the report and has compiled an analysis of how it delivers in relation to WAAMH’s recommendations in its submission to the Sustainable Health Review. WAAMH urges members to review the Interim Report (for which an Executive Summary is available) and provide feedback to WAAMH or via the survey or public Q&A sessions.
