The Towards Elimination of Restrictive Practices 11th National Forum (formerly Seclusion & Restraint Reduction Forum) will be hosted in Perth on 4 and 5 May 2017 at The University Club of Western Australia. Individuals and organisations interested in participating in the forum are invited to submit an abstract of their proposed oral or poster presentation.
The forum is an avenue for clinicians, practitioners, consumers and carers/family members to come together to present innovations in practice, forge ideas and policy directions and facilitate robust dialogue based on research, clinical practice and lived experience. It facilitates a national commitment to eliminating the use of restrictive practices across the lifespan in a variety of mental health settings.
The forum theme: Working together, a culture of care is not only about working collaboratively but also about how we care: safe, quality clinical care and respect for individuals and their networks. In further support of the forum theme, we encourage co-production among clinicians, practitioners, consumers and carers/family members in presentation and poster abstract submissions. More than one abstract per person/team is permitted.
Review and Selection
Abstracts for oral and poster presentation will be reviewed by the forum Scientific Sub-Committee (consisting of people with lived experience, clinicians and academics) using the following criteria:
- Information presented in the abstract is robust enough to be included in the program
- Content relevance to the forum theme
- Assessment of the originality of work
- Supports working together and a culture of care
- Presents new knowledge in eliminating the use of restrictive practices
- Implications for clinical practice; consumer, carer/family wellbeing; and policy and service directives identified
- Generalisability of work to other settings
- Content presents substantial results indicating the work has been or is nearly completed
- Supports consumer/carer/family member innovations in field.

- In developing abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations, it is important to remember that sharing and re-telling stories can be a powerful way to support each other and develop new conversations. However, we ask that:
- permission is obtained by presenters who will be re-telling stories of others as part of their oral or poster presentations;
- when re-telling stories of others, you are mindful of the conditions placed upon re-telling by the owner of the story, regarding the level of disclosures permitted;
- you obtain written permission from people who may appear in photos or videos used in your presentations and that their names and contact information remains confidential and are not given during the presentation; and
- in telling and re-telling stories please be mindful that you do not characterise other people and communities, in ways that they themselves would not prefer.
