This course explores specific risk and protective factors for suicide in asylum seekers and refugees, with the aim of increasing participants’ insight into the challenges faced by this population and how these challenges interact with risk of suicide.
Target Audience: For frontline staff working across a variety of services with refugees and asylum seekers.
Suicide Risk in People from Refugee and Asylum-Seeking backgrounds
People from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds often face complex and unique challenges that can have an adverse impact on mental health and wellbeing.
This course is facilitated by experienced trainers from the Association for Services to Torture and Trauma Survivors (ASeTTS) and introduces tools and skills that can be used in assessing and responding to the risk of suicide in refugees and asylum seekers. Participants will be introduced to a suicide risk assessment framework and how to apply this framework to working with refugees and asylum seekers. The course will also look at the impact on the worker themselves of working with suicidality, with a focus on self-care.
This course will support participants to:
- Be able to identity suicide risk and protective factors in people from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds
- Explore ways of working with suicide risk (e.g., safety planning & making referrals, documentation)
- Have enhanced awareness of their own attitudes and beliefs towards suicidality
- Reflect on the impact of this work and identify key supports and self-care strategies
