Advocating for Others - 22/05/2019 - Perth
The course focuses on building participants’ skills to support other people’s advocacy journey. With a focus on “doing with, not doing for” it will help supporters to identify when it is appropriate to advocate on someone’s behalf and how to minimize this, in favour of empowering consumers’ self-advocacy.
Suitable for professionals, peers and other support people who would like to learn more about the process of supporting someone to achieve their advocacy goals.
The PLANNED approach to advocacy will be introduced: Plan, Learn, Ask, Negotiate, Escalate, Document.
Content covered includes:
- Types of advocacy
- Rights and responsibilities
- Identifying consumer goals
- How to empower
- Relevant legislation
- Communicating clearly
- Accessing information and support
- Advocacy tools and techniques
- Links with systems advocacy.
There are two scholarship places available for consumers or carers who face financial difficulty in attending this course. Scholarship applications close 10 business days prior to course and the successful applicants will be notified five business days prior to commencement of the event.
