    Advocacy Mentoring: become a PAID mentor!

    This FREE one-day workshop introduces a range of specific skills and provides opportunities for live practice in mentoring.

    Learn to help others become advocates by sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience, with paid mentoring roles available, following the course.

    Experienced consumer / carer advocates are invited to express interest in sharing their advocacy experience with others.

    The program involves:

    • attending this free, one day training course, and then
    • being paid to facilitate four small group mentoring sessions for new and emerging advocates.

    BACKGROUND
    WAAMH has received strong member and community input, on
    the need to build advocacy skills and leadership capacity of people with lived experience. 

    In response to this, four two day Consumer and Carer Advocacy Skills workshops have been provided.

    Advocacy Workshop participants were then offered the opportunity to be
     mentored by an experienced consumer or carer advocate, to discuss approaches, opportunities and support needs on a small group basis.

    This mentoring workshop will equip experience mentors for this role.

    PROGRAM
    Individuals who complete the Mentoring Workshop will then have the opportunity to be remunerated for their knowledge, skills, experience, and time as a small group mentor.

    Mentors will conduct four mentoring sessions, over the course of a year, on a small group basis (3-5 people).

    A payment of $195 will be paid for each meeting, which will last for up to three hours and will be scheduled to suit the mentor and participants. This payment includes any preparation and written feedback via email. 

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    This program is restricted to people who are ALL of the following:

    • consumers, family members or carers  
      (ie: people who have personal experience of living with a mental illness or their families or carers)
    • experienced mental health advocates 
      You must have advocacy experience, be either a professional advocate or have done advocacy as part of another role (eg: as a Peer Worker) or extensive experience in a professional standard of advocacy in a voluntary role.  
    • are available all day on Friday 24 Feb to attend the Mentoring Workshop, plus for four x 3 hour workshops in the following year, scheduled to suit you

    If you meet these requirements WAAMH is looking for people who: 

    • Are enthusiastic and optimistic about the mentoring workshop;
    • Can bring an informed perspective to all discussion;
    • Have been able to integrate their experiences, both professional and/or personal, retain from their experience and have wisdom and knowledge to share with others;
    • Are able to think objectively and be capable of making reasoned judgement;
    • Have an understanding of the rehabilitation and recovery paradigm and the value of consumer and family/carer participation; and
    • Have well developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team and also maintain good working relationships with team members and other stakeholders.

    The workshop will give potential mentors the necessary information to be a good mentor and provide guidelines, tools and skills for the mentoring relationships. The workshop will:

    • Provide ongoing support to Consumer and Carer Advocacy workshop participants, to help them integrate the workshop learning and establish themselves as consumer and carer advocates;
    • Provide paid recognition and mentoring skills training to experienced consumer and carer advocates;
    • Capture the benefits of mentors’ experience and expertise;
    • Ensure mentees are informed about specific opportunities for input, co-design and collaboration;
    • Provide opportunity for the newer consumer and carer advocates to discuss approaches, generate ideas and resolve issues;
    • Foster positive peer relationships and build a culture of advocacy and inclusion in WA.
