This course is designed to equip staff with the skills and knowledge to effectively respond to people displaying distressed, exaggerated or unexpected behaviour.
Target Audience: Frontline staff working alongside the public
Staff working alongside the public may encounter people in a distressed condition or engaging in exaggerated or unexpected behaviour. Learning how to respond appropriately can diffuse a potentially stressful or escalated situation, ensuring a smooth resolution for all parties involved.

- Common triggers
- Trauma and the anger iceberg
- Signs of escalation
- The escalation curve
- The physiology of escalation
- SAFE de-escalation
- Situational analysis
- Assessing danger
- Facilitating de-escalation through personal preparation, verbal and non-verbal techniques
- Evaluating incidents.
One of WAAMH's most popular courses with community service organisations; local councils; government departments; and health services this course blends theory and practice to prepare participants to carry out de-escalation across a variety of work environments.
There are two scholarship places available for consumers or carers who face financial difficulty in attending this course. Scholarship applications close 10 business days prior to course and the successful applicants will be notified five business days prior to commencement of the event.
