Trauma Informed Care - 15/10/2018 - PERTH
The majority of people treated by mental health and substance abuse services have traumatic histories. This introductory level workshop presented by WAAMH will focus on how to become 'trauma-informed' when working with people who have experienced trauma and or abuse in their life.
Traumatic past experiences can impact and resonate for many years after the event and across several generations. Often well meaning caregivers and professionals inadvertently re-traumatise and compound the harm, because they have never been specifically trained in responding effectively to the after-effects of trauma.
Becoming 'trauma-informed' is all about understanding, recognising, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma and creating the types of psychologically safe environments, necessary to rebuild lives.
Content covered includes:
- Types of trauma
- Trauma-informed principles – safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment
- Impact of unresolved experiences
- Commonly associated disorders including complex PTSD
- Triggers and stress responses
- Optimism and recovery
- Safety and stabalisation
- Adaptive coping
- Effective care and support.
