Training Course

This course offers participants an informative and experiential workshop which will empower them to identify and intervene when mental health issues first arise.

Target Audience: Suitable for staff working across a variety of services including care services, housing, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, disability, first aid, aged care and education, where early intervention will positively impact mental health outcomes.

The capacity to provide early identification and effective brief early intervention is important to the trajectory of clients experiencing mental health challenges. Early intervention can be done by various roles of mental health professionals and will significantly contribute to better outcomes for clients, their families and their communities.

Using current screening and support tools they will develop the confidence to provide effective early intervention. Additionally, participants will be able to identify the need for crisis intervention and referral where more appropriate.

Participants will also have the opportunity to develop their skills by using practice tools to respond to real-life scenarios.

This course will support participants to:

  • Understand the recovery approach to mental health.
  • Identify common signs of mental challenges including anxiety, depression and psychosis
  • Be able to apply a trauma informed lens to establish and build safe and positive relationships.
  • Become familiar with common screening tools including Kessler Psychological Distress (K10), Depression and Anxiety Stress scales (DASS), Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) and Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS).
  • Apply the 5 A’s in supporting clients (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange).
  • Engage in brief interventions using the FRAMES model to support clients.
  • Provide solution focused responses and understand when crisis intervention and referral are necessary.

Scholarships:

There are two scholarship places available for consumers or carers who face financial difficulty in attending this course. Scholarship applications close 10 business days prior to course and the successful applicants will be notified five business days prior to commencement of the event.
